  • Heworth Grange Youth Theatre shortlisted for national musical theatre award

Heworth Grange Academy has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award recognising its outstanding musical theatre provision and the impact it has on students, families and the wider school community.

Heworth Grange Youth Theatre (HGYT) has been shortlisted for the MTI Award for Achievement in Musical Theatre Provision at the Music & Drama Education Awards 2027, with the winners announced at an awards ceremony in London next year.

The award recognises schools where musical theatre has a significant impact on students and the wider school community – something that has become a defining part of life at Heworth Grange.

HGYT provides students with opportunities to develop confidence, resilience, creativity, communication and teamwork, while creating a strong sense of belonging. Students are also given opportunities behind the scenes in areas including lighting, sound, stage management, costumes and front of house.

The programme brings together students, staff, families, volunteers and former pupils, with alumni regularly returning to support current students and share their experiences of careers in the creative industries.

Last year, HGYT celebrated its 50th anniversary, bringing together generations of former students, while also securing the performance rights to Disney's Frozen following success in a Music Theatre International competition.

Erin Anderson, Associate Assistant Principal at Heworth Grange Academy, said:

“I’m incredibly proud that this has now been recognised through being shortlisted. Musical theatre is such an important part of Heworth and is about far more than simply putting on a show. It brings together Music, Drama and Dance, as well as pupils, staff, families, former pupils and volunteers, and has become a real part of the culture of our school.

“Regardless of the final outcome, I feel incredibly proud that what we have built at Heworth has received this national recognition.”

The shortlist celebrates the dedication of students, staff, families, volunteers and generations of former pupils who have helped make Heworth Grange Youth Theatre such an important part of the school community.
