Thornhill Academy Site Manager Receives National Pearson Teaching Award Recognition

We are delighted to share that Andy Peterson, Site Manager at Thornhill Academy has been recognised with a prestigious Silver Award in the Unsung Hero category at the Pearson National Teaching Awards. 

The award recognises Andy's exceptional contribution to education and his remarkable commitment to the Thornhill Academy community since joining the school in 2019.

Described as the "heartbeat of Thornhill Academy", Andy works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the school remains safe, operational and welcoming for students, staff and visitors. Living on site and effectively available around the clock, he plays a vital role in responding to emergencies, maintaining facilities and supporting the wider school community.

Yesterday, students and staff came together for a special Thank a Teacher assembly, where all staff received heartfelt messages and video tributes from students expressing their appreciation for the support, care and opportunities they provide every day. The celebration continued with tea and cakes, before Andy was presented with the surprise news that he had received the national award.

Over the past six years, Andy has been instrumental in keeping Thornhill Academy running despite the significant challenges presented by the school's ageing buildings. His dedication has helped ensure that students continue to learn in a safe and supportive environment while plans progress for the school's forthcoming rebuild.

Beyond his day-to-day responsibilities, Andy has overseen major repair projects across the school, including restoring facilities affected by water damage, maintaining the community sports hall and swimming pool, and supporting the development of specialist provision.

Andy's contribution has played a significant role in creating the positive environment recognised in Thornhill Academy's recent Ofsted inspection and has helped support some of Sunderland's most disadvantaged young people to thrive.

As a Silver Award winner, Andy has now been shortlisted for a Pearson National Teaching Award Gold Award. The national winners will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony in London this November.
