  • Washington Academy Teaching Assistant Shortlisted for National TES Award

Washington Academy is proud to announce that John Shell, Higher Level Teaching Assistant, has been shortlisted for Teaching Assistant of the Year at the prestigious TES Awards, recognising his exceptional contribution to education and student development.

John has also recently received national recognition for his work, earning an invitation to the Education and Skills Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. This honour celebrates individuals who have made a significant impact on young people’s lives.

John said, “I feel so lucky to do a job I love every day. Supporting our students and seeing them grow is at the heart of everything I do and being invited to the Garden Party is an incredible honour.”

Working within a diverse school community, John has been instrumental in transforming learning through a unique, timetabled enrichment programme. Designed to support all students, the programme connects classroom learning with real-world experiences. Through partnerships with organisations including Santander, Apple and Asda, students gain valuable insight into financial literacy, digital skills and the world of work.

John has also led a wide range of hands-on initiatives, from community litter picks and environmental projects to podcast and film production. These experiences help students develop confidence, independence and essential life skills, while strengthening links between the school and the local community.

Overcoming the challenge of shifting perceptions around learning beyond the classroom, John worked collaboratively with colleagues and school leaders to embed the programme into daily school life. His dedication has created meaningful opportunities for students, many of whom are accessing experiences for the first time.

Vicky Carter, Principal at Washington Academy, said:
Through partnerships with organisations, community projects and hands-on experiences, John ensures our young people develop confidence, independence and real-world skills. We are immensely proud of the impact he has at Washington Academy and delighted to see his work recognised at a national level.”

Michael McCarthy, CEO of Consilium Academies, said:
“This is a fantastic honour for John and a wonderful reflection of the difference that committed staff make across our schools. John’s work embodies the values of Consilium Academies -ensuring every student has access to opportunities that broaden horizons, build skills and strengthen connections with their communities. His dedication to supporting young people and creating innovative learning experiences is inspiring, and we are thrilled to see him recognised at such a prestigious event.”

John’s shortlisting highlights the transformative impact of his work and the vital role support staff play in shaping young lives.

    Congratulations John!
