  • Washington Academy students gain life skills with fire service in Sunderland

    A group of Year 7 and 8 students from Washington Academy, have successfully completed the Phoenix Course delivered by fire service crews in Sunderland, gaining valuable life skills and confidence along the way.

    The Phoenix Course is designed to support young people in developing teamwork, communication and resilience, while also providing an insight into the vital work of the fire service.

    Throughout the course, students took part in a range of practical and engaging activities that challenged them both individually and as part of a team.

    The experience proved to be extremely positive for those involved.

    One student said: “I really enjoyed the course – it helped build my confidence and taught me how to work as part of a team.”

    Principal of Washington Academy, Vicky Carter, said: “Opportunities like the Phoenix Course are invaluable for our young people.

    "It was fantastic to see our students grow in confidence, develop teamwork skills and challenge themselves in a supportive environment.

    "We are incredibly grateful to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service for its commitment to working with our students and providing such a meaningful experience.”

    Washington Academy extended a huge thank you to the fire service team at Sunderland for their support and guidance throughout the course, helping to inspire and empower students beyond the classroom.
