
This Christmas, local secondary schools Consilium Evolve, Thornhill Academy and Washington Academy, part of Consilium Academies, are celebrating the retirements of three highly valued colleagues.
Their long-standing service has had a significant and lasting impact on students, staff and communities across Sunderland and Washington.
After an incredible 25 years of service, James Ferry is retiring from the IT and Technical Services department. Beginning his career at Washington School and supporting its transition into Washington Academy, James has gone on to provide expert technical support across the Trust.
His dedication and professionalism have ensured that students, teachers, support staff and the wider community benefit from reliable, high-quality IT services, enabling schools to deliver the very best educational experiences.
Joel Thornton, Director of Infrastructure and Estates, said: "James’s expertise, dedication and professionalism have been pivotal in creating safe, supportive and thriving learning environments across our schools.
"We are truly thankful for everything he has done, and he will be greatly missed."
Also retiring is Brian Calder, who has dedicated 17 years of service as Head of Year at Washington Academy.
A highly respected and popular member of staff within the school and wider community, Brian’s retirement has prompted hundreds of messages of thanks and well wishes from former students and parents on social media.
Known for his commitment, leadership and genuine care for young people, Brian has played a vital role in shaping the lives of countless students.
His influence and legacy will continue to be felt long after his retirement.
Completing this trio of retirements is Elizabeth Jardine, who is retiring after 21 years of dedicated service as a Teaching Assistant at Consilium Evolve.
Widely known for her warmth, patience and belief in every student’s potential, Liz has been a cornerstone of the Consilium Evolve community.
She has supported students both in and beyond the classroom, creating inclusive environments where young people feel valued, confident and supported.

While they will be greatly missed by colleagues, students and families, the legacy left by James Ferry, Brian Calder and Elizabeth Jardine will continue to shape Consilium Academies for many years to come.
